The UK government aims to ban the sale of new petrol and new diesel cars by 2030. This initiative is to promote the use of electric vehicles (EVS). The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) is a government department that provides grants to help individuals and businesses buy EVs or set up charging points.

Electric vehicle ChargePoint and infrastructure grants are among the government grants for EVs available to landlords. Businesses can benefit from the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS); meanwhile, drivers who want to purchase an electric vehicle can get financial support from the Plugin Grant. These grants are administered by OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles). We will discuss these grants in this article:

EV ChargePoint Grant

An EV ChargePoint grant for installing EV charging points helps you save money on the cost of installing sockets for electric vehicles' ChargePoint. You may be eligible to claim up to 75% of the cost to buy and install a socket or £350 per socket, whichever is lower. The grant is not available if the installation of ChargePoint is a mandatory requirement.

The electric vehicle ChargePoint grant is open till 31 March 2025.

You are eligible to claim up to:

  • 200 EV ChargePoint grants per financial year for residential property
  • 100 EV ChargePoint grants per financial year for commercial property

The ChargePoint you install must:

  • supply a minimum of 3.5kW to each ChargePoint socket - this applies to sockets installed when they are being used for charging at the same time,
  • have an on-site 3-year warranty on parts and installation,
  • Meet the needs of EV owners with disabilities or mobility issues.

You need to install an approved ChargePoint model by OZEV and from an authorised installer. Your claim will be rejected if your ChargePoint model is not on the approved list.

You can visit the official government web page to find the approved lists for Residential and Commercial ChargePoints.

In the case of ChargePoint for commercial properties, the ChargePoint should only be used by the staff of the building and not by the members of the public.

Electric Vehicle (EV) Infrastructure Grant

The electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure grant is provided for the cost of building and installation work needed to install ChargePoint sockets. It is the grant for installing electric charging points. You may be eligible to claim up to 75% of the costs of work or £30,000, whichever is lower.

The grant amount depends on how many parking spaces the cork covers. You can get up to:

  • £350 per ChargePoint socket installed
  • £500 per parking space enabled with supporting infrastructure

You can receive up to 30 infrastructure grants each financial year in residential carparks, each of which must be used for different property. However, you cannot claim this grant as a commercial landlord. The electric vehicle infrastructure grant is open till 31 March 2025.

Who can Apply for EV ChargePoint and Infrastructure Grant?

There are rules governing whether you are eligible to apply for these grants or not. You can check whether you can apply for the grant  through the official government website. If you meet the requirements for an EV infrastructure grant and EV ChargePoint grant, you must create a landlord account to apply. Before applying for the grant, you must agree with the authorised installer about what work will be done. If you successfully apply, OZEV will inform your installer, and the installer will take the grant amount off your bill.

To apply for the grant, you will need a landlord profile. To create a landlord profile, you will need the following:

  • Email address
  • A UK mobile phone
  • Company registration number or VAT registration number

You can create a landlord account with ease by filling in the necessary details in the government website.

You must submit a separate application for each if you use more than one installer or need to apply for more than one address. You should also apply separately for residential and commercial properties.

EV Grants for Business

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a grant available to businesses. The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a voucher-based scheme that provides eligible applicants with support towards the upfront costs of purchasing and installing electric vehicle (EV) ChargePoints.

OZEV provides this grant with some conditions for any business, public authority, or charity. You may be eligible to claim up to 75% of the cost to buy (including VAT) and install a socket or £350 per socket, whichever is lower. A single business can claim a grant of up to 40 sockets. If less than 40 sockets are applied for, you can submit additional applications in the future until you reach the limit.

Eligibility Criteria

Businesses must meet these eligibility criteria to qualify for the grants:

  • There should be a dedicated parking space for staff
  • Must own the property or have consent from the landlord to install ChargePoints
  • Charging stations need to be installed by an approved OZEV installer

Before applying for this grant, you need to satisfy the terms and conditions. If you meet these criteria, you can fill out the application form. Once your application form is approved, you will receive a digital voucher from OZEV, valid for six months. Your EV ChargePoint installer will deduct the grant amount from your bill and will claim the grant on your behalf.

Government Grant for New EV

The plugin grant is a government initiative to promote purchasing of electric vehicles. The plugin grant is available to eligible electric vehicles, making them more affordable. This grant is aimed at increasing the usage of electric vehicles.

The discount you get depends on the type of vehicle. You won't need to apply for this grant; the dealer will automatically apply the discount on the cost. These are the types of eligible vehicles:

This article helps you understand the various EV grants you can benefit from and the eligibility criteria to claim these grants. As the government aims to make EVs more affordable, these grants can help you purchase EVs and set up charging points.
