Don’t Miss Out on Money

Am I Entitled to a Self Assessment Tax Return?

You may be eligible for a tax return if you have overpaid tax through Self Assessment. You may be entitled to get a tax refund in one of the following situations:

  • Excess Tax Paid on Self-Employment Income: If your profits were lower than expected but you already made payments on account.
  • Overpaid Tax on Rental or Investment Income: If tax was deducted at source or your income falls within a lower tax band, you may be due a repayment.
  • Tax Relief on Allowable Expenses: If you’re a landlord, self-employed or a high earner, claiming deductible expenses and reliefs can lead to a refund.
  • Pension & Gift Aid Contributions: Higher-rate taxpayers can claim additional relief on pension payments and charity donations.

Not sure if you qualify? Book a free consultation with UK Property Accountants, and we’ll review your case to determine if you’re owed a Self Assessment tax refund.

Deadline Obligations

Claim What’s Yours on Time!

If you’re owed a tax refund, it’s important to claim it within HMRC’s time limits to avoid missing out.

Key Deadlines for Claiming a Tax Return

  • You can claim a tax refund for up to four tax years after the end of the tax year in which you overpaid.
  •  This means 5 April 2025 is the deadline to claim 2020/21 tax year refund.

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?

  • If you fail to claim within the four-year window, HMRC will not process your refund.
  • Any unclaimed overpayments will be kept by HMRC, meaning you lose out on money that should be yours.

FAQs

General queries by our clients related to Self Assessment Tax Return Refund are answered here.

Who is eligible to claim a tax refund after Self-Assessment?

You are eligible for a tax refund after your self-assessment if you have overpaid tax. This overpayment of tax could arise of various reasons such as:

  • Tax Deductions/Reliefs: You missed claiming eligible deductions or reliefs, such as business expenses, pension contributions, or charitable donations.
  • Incorrect Tax Code: If HMRC assigned you the wrong tax code, causing overpayment.

How do I apply for a tax refund from HMRC?

If you completed a Self-Assessment, HMRC will calculate whether you’ve overpaid. If so, HMRC will generally issue a letter(P800) to individuals who have overpaid or underpaid tax during the tax year.

If your P800 tax calculation letter states you're due a refund, you can claim your money back on the government website here.

You will need to create a Government Gateway user ID here if you don’t already have one.

Once logged in, you can request a refund by selecting your preferred payment method: bank transfer, cheque, or credit towards future tax.

If you didn’t receive P800 letter but you think you have overpaid tax, then you can apply for a refund by contacting HMRC directly through its online portal or by calling 0300 200 3300.

How long does it take to receive a tax refund after filing a Self-Assessment?

The time you have to wait for a tax refund varies significantly – from five days to eight weeks or more, depending on what it is you are reclaiming and how you applied or were notified.

If you receive P800 letter and request a refund via bank account, you can receive it within 5 working days. However, if you don’t do this within 21 days of receiving the letter or decided to claim refund via cheque it might take up to 6 weeks or longer.

However, if your return is more complex or there are discrepancies, it may take longer to process.

How do I check the status of my HMRC tax refund?

To check the status of your HMRC tax refund, you can follow these steps:

  1. Log into your HMRC Online Account: Go to the HMRC website and log in using your Government Gateway credentials.
  2. Check your Self-Assessment Account: Once logged in, navigate to your Self-Assessment account. You can see any updates or messages regarding your tax refund.
  3. Look for Refund Details: HMRC typically sends you a notification once your refund is processed. If it’s been issued, the status will show in your account, including whether it’s been sent to your bank account or by cheque.
  4. Wait Times: If you haven't received your refund, keep in mind it can take up to 8 weeks. If it’s been longer, you can contact HMRC for more information.

You can also call HMRC to check your Refund status.
