What our clients say about us
Rendering the best service with a team of qualified and regulated accountants and tax advisers.
Getting VAT registration wrong costs more than getting it right. Here is why businesses trust UKPA to handle theirs.
VAT Registration Experts
Our experts understand how HMRC treats business supplies be it taxable, exempt, zero-rated, or mixed. We know which registration scenarios HMRC scrutinises and what a correctly prepared application looks like.
End-to-End Service
We handle the whole thing. Confirming your taxable turnover and effective date, preparing the VAT 1, submitting through HMRC's agent portal, chasing if needed, confirming your VAT number when it comes through.
Tailored Support
What you need to register depends on your legal structure, the types of supply you make, and how your business operates. We work that out before we prepare anything, which is why what we submit reflects your position.
Get It Right First Time
Around 30% of VAT registration applications are rejected. Most because of incorrect information or a misunderstanding of how the application works. Here's what causes it most often.
Incorrect business details
Director details, registered address, and bank account information must match exactly what's held at Companies House and with your bank. HMRC doesn't query discrepancies, it rejects.
Wrong SIC code
HMRC has rejected applications where the SIC code indicated an exempt activity, even where taxable activities were also being carried out. For businesses with mixed supply types, the SIC code selection determines whether your application gets through at all.
Insufficient proof of trading activity
HMRC needs evidence the business is genuinely trading or intending to trade namely bank statements, invoices or contracts, and address verification. Submitting the application without ends the registration process.
Incomplete identification
Three pieces of ID are required: one photo ID and two non-photo documents. It's one of the most common causes of delay, and one of the most avoidable. A rejection doesn't just mean resubmitting. In mandatory registration cases, penalties are accumulating from the date you should have registered and they keep running while the application starts again.

Assessment to approval
From the moment you instruct us, we take over assessing your position, preparing your application, and liaising with HMRC until your VAT number is confirmed.
We translate your registration position into a complete, accurate VAT 1 application covering your business details, supply types, expected taxable turnover, and effective date ready for submission to HMRC.
We submit your completed application directly through HMRC's agent portal on your behalf. You do not need to interact with HMRC at any point during the process.
We monitor your application, respond to any HMRC queries or requests for further information, and keep you updated throughout. Current HMRC processing times vary so we chase where needed.
Once HMRC issues your VAT registration certificate, we confirm your VAT number, effective date, and when you need to start charging VAT.
What happens next
Registration is the start of a new set of obligations. Here's what changes from your effective date.
VAT must be charged on all taxable supplies at the correct rate, standard (20%), reduced (5%), or zero-rated (0%). That clock starts from the effective date, not the day your VAT number arrives.
Every invoice for a taxable supply must show your VAT registration number, tax point date, net amount, VAT rate, and VAT amount as a separate figure. Missing any of these means the invoice doesn't meet HMRC's requirements and your customer can't use it to reclaim their input tax.
All VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and submit returns through Making Tax Digital compatible software. HMRC sets your return frequency at registration usually quarterly. Your first return period begins from your effective date. It arrives sooner than most newly registered businesses expect.
Once registered, you can reclaim VAT on goods and services used for your business. Pre-registration costs aren't written off. Goods purchased within 4 years and still on hand qualify, as do services within the last 6 months.
Client Scenarios
Whatever your structure, we confirm your registration position, prepare your application, and submit it to HMRC.

They're right. Zero-rated sales still count as taxable supplies, so mandatory registration can apply even when no VAT is charged on the sale itself. We confirm your position and handle registration with the correct effective date.

Serviced accommodation is standard-rated and counts in full toward the threshold. If you've already crossed it, late registration penalties run from the date you should have registered. We calculate your exact threshold date and submit accordingly.

Once you start making taxable supplies on commercial property, registration is required above the threshold and available voluntarily below it. We confirm which applies to you and prepare the application with the correct supply information.

Voluntary registration makes sense for contractors paying VAT on materials and equipment, you can reclaim it rather than absorbing it. We confirm your eligibility, identify the most beneficial effective date, and get you registered before the deadline.

It is. An SPV with mixed supply types needs an application that correctly describes each supply from the start, errors here are harder to fix after the fact. We assess your supply position and prepare the application accordingly.

Yes, if you're making taxable supplies in the UK. Where the business is based doesn't change that. We handle registration for non-UK resident businesses and manage all HMRC correspondence on your behalf.

It depends on your supply types and your taxable turnover. If taxable turnover has exceeded £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, mandatory registration applies. Your effective date is the first day of the month after you crossed the threshold not the date you apply, which is a distinction that matters if you're already late. For property businesses specifically, residential lettings are exempt and don't count toward the threshold but commercial lettings with an Option to Tax, short-term letting income, and zero-rated new-build sales all do.
HMRC works out what you should have paid from the date you should have registered and issues a retrospective assessment, plus a penalty on top. The penalty is 5% of net VAT due if you're less than 9 months late, 10% between 9 and 18 months, and 15% beyond that. Interest runs on the overdue VAT throughout.
Yes. Voluntary registration is open to any business making or intending to make taxable supplies, whatever the turnover. For property developers paying VAT on construction costs and professional fees, registering early means recovering that input tax rather than absorbing it as a cost.
Usually 10 to 30 working days, though it depends on complexity and whether HMRC wants further information. Overseas businesses and those with mixed or complex supply types tend to wait longer. Once approved, HMRC issues a VAT Registration Certificate with your VAT number, effective date, and first return due date.
