Understand Partnership Account Completely

What You Need to Know About Partnership Accounts & Tax Return

Filing your partnership tax return is a legal requirement for any UK partnership. This annual submission to HMRC provides a comprehensive summary of your partnership’s income, expenses, and overall financial activity. Under the self-assessment system, each partner’s share of the income is reported on their individual tax returns, making the accuracy and timeliness of the partnership return critical.

  • Partnerships must file an annual tax return with HMRC detailing income, expenses and financial activity
  • Each partner’s share of the partnership’s income is included in their personal Self Assessment Tax Return, supported by the comprehensive partnership return
  • Every partnership is assigned a UTR that must be used to track its tax records
  • File by 31 January (or 31 October for paper returns) to avoid penalties

FAQs

General queries by our clients related to Partnership Accounts & Tax Return are answered here.

What is a partnership tax return, and who needs to file it?

A partnership tax return is a document submitted to HMRC by a partnership, including Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs), to report its income, expenses, and profits for a given tax year. It is used to calculate the tax liabilities of the individual partners based on their share of the partnership's profits.

All Partnerships (including LLPs) need to file a partnership tax return if they are carrying on a business and have taxable income. Individual partners do not file separate returns for the partnership’s income but instead report their share of the profits on their personal Self-Assessment tax returns. The partnership return (SA800) includes the details of the business’s income and expenditures, but each partner is responsible for reporting their share of the income and paying tax on it.

The partner nominated by the other members of the partnership during the period covered by the tax return is required by law to complete it and send it to HMRC.

How do I prepare partnership accounts for HMRC?

To prepare partnership accounts for HMRC, you can follow the following steps:

  1. Keep Accurate Records: Maintain detailed records of all business transactions, including income, expenses, assets, and liabilities. This includes receipts, invoices, bank statements, and other relevant financial documents.
  2. Prepare Financial Statements:
    • Profit and Loss Statement: Summarise the income and allowable expenses for the partnership, calculating the net profit or loss for the tax year.
    • Balance Sheet: List the partnership's assets, liabilities, and equity as of the end of the accounting period.
  1. Allocate Profits and Losses: Based on the partnership agreement, divide the profits or losses among the partners according to their agreed-upon shares.
  2. Prepare the Partnership Tax Return (SA800):
    • Complete the SA800 form, which details the partnership’s income, expenses, and profit. Each partner’s share of the profit is also reported here.
    • File this form with HMRC by the deadline (31 January after the end of the tax year).
  1. Prepare Individual Tax Returns: Each partner must report their share of the partnership’s profit on their own Self-Assessment tax return (SA100).
  2. Submit to HMRC: Once the partnership return (SA800) and each partner’s Self-Assessment returns are completed, submit them to HMRC by the deadlines (31 January for online submissions).

What is the deadline for submitting a partnership accounts in the UK?

The deadline for submitting a partnership tax return (SA800) in the UK is 31 January following the end of the tax year (which runs from 6 April to 5 April). This applies to online submissions.

If you're filing a paper return, the deadline is 31 October following the end of the tax year.

Where do I send SA800 form?

  3. Log in to Your HMRC Account: Once registered, log in to your HMRC online account using your Government Gateway credentials.
  4. Complete the SA800 Form: The SA800 is the partnership tax return form. You’ll need to provide details of the partnership’s income, expenses, and profits for the tax year, along with each partner's share of the profit.
