HMRC Sends Letters Ahead of Major Income Tax Change in April 2026

Published Date: November 10, 2025

( Last Updated: February 19, 2026 )

HMRC has begun sending more than 200,000 letters to individuals who will soon be affected by a major shift in the UK’s tax system. With only five months remaining, self-employed individuals and landlords earning over £50,000 are being urged to prepare for the rollout of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD ITSA), which becomes mandatory on 6 April 2026.

The reform marks a key milestone in the government’s digital transformation of the tax system. Under the new process, eligible taxpayers will be required to maintain digital records and report their income online through HMRC-approved software. Although the official launch is still months away, HMRC is encouraging affected individuals to start preparing early by joining its ongoing testing programme.

How to Prepare for the Income Tax Change?

HMRC has emphasised that the new digital system is designed to simplify, not complicate, the reporting process. Instead of submitting a single annual Self Assessment Tax Return, individuals will provide quarterly digital updates summarising their income and expenses. These updates will be generated automatically through compatible software, making tax submissions more efficient and transparent.

Participants in the current testing phase have already submitted thousands of updates successfully, with early feedback suggesting that the digital process offers a smoother, less stressful experience. HMRC has also assured taxpayers that errors identified in one update can easily be corrected in the next, helping to reduce last-minute pressure and improve accuracy.

Choosing the Right MTD Software

To comply with the new rules, businesses and landlords will need HMRC-recognised MTD-compatible software capable of generating and submitting quarterly updates. HMRC has confirmed that there are both free and paid options available, depending on users’ needs. Some programs integrate directly with existing spreadsheets or accounting software, enabling a seamless transition to digital reporting.

The tax authority has also highlighted the practical benefits of digital bookkeeping. Compatible software provides real-time estimates of tax liabilities throughout the year, giving taxpayers greater visibility and control over their finances. This approach helps with cash flow management and prevents the familiar stress of large, unexpected tax bills in January.

Start Take Action Right Now

HMRC is strongly advising taxpayers to take advantage of the remaining months before the MTD deadline to familiarise themselves with digital reporting. Early preparation will allow them to test the system, identify suitable software, and access dedicated support during the adjustment period.

The first phase of the rollout will cover approximately 780,000 landlords and self-employed individuals with income above £50,000, with an additional 970,000 expected to join in April 2027 as the income threshold lowers. The department has described this as a crucial step toward building a modern, streamlined tax system that reduces paperwork and promotes year-round compliance.

Conclusion

As the April 2026 deadline approaches, HMRC’s message is clear: preparation now will ease the transition later. Those who adopt digital tools early are likely to find the process far simpler when the new system becomes mandatory.

The move to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax represents a major cultural and administrative shift, aiming to create a more accurate, transparent, and efficient tax environment for UK taxpayers. For landlords and self-employed individuals, starting early could make all the difference in ensuring a smooth, compliant start to the new digital era.
